Flying With Pen Needles: TSA Rules, Packing Tips, and a Travel Checklist

The good news: flying with pen needles is allowed and routine. A little planning just makes security faster and keeps you from running short far from home.

Can you bring pen needles on a plane?

Yes. The TSA allows insulin and diabetes supplies — including pens and unused needles — in both carry-on and checked bags. Unused needles and syringes are permitted when they travel with the injectable medication they're used for, so keep your needles packed alongside your pen.

Medically necessary liquids, including injectable medications, are exempt from the usual 3.4 oz (100 ml) carry-on limit. Rules can change, so it's worth a quick check of the TSA site before you fly.

Carry-on, not checked

Even though checked bags are allowed, keep your medication and needles in your carry-on. Checked luggage can be delayed or lost, and cargo holds can get very cold or very hot. • Once-weekly GLP-1, one-week trip: you only need one or two needles, but bring a few spares in case of a dropped or bent needle. A 4-count trial pack or 6-count pack fits easily in a toiletry bag.
• Daily insulin: count your injections per day × days away, then double it. For longer trips, a loose handful from a 100-count box in a small zip pouch saves space.
